Organic Skin Care

I was reading a book recently called “Gorgeously Green” by Sophie Uliano.  She describes easy (and not so easy) ways to make your life green-er and explains why it’s so important to do so.  One of the first steps in her greening up process was to go through your skin care items and read the ingredients.  The author wants you to categorize everything from your best eye cream for wrinkles to your toothpaste.  I did the exercise and was frankly pretty surprised at what I found in all of my shampoos, lotions, creams and cleansers.

These products are especially important for a couple of reasons.  First of all, they are applied directly to your body so the chance of them being absorbed into your system is extremely high.  If it is something that you wouldn’t want to eat, you really shouldn’t be coating your body with it.  Some of the additives lead to skin irritation, allergic reactions, rashes and may even be carcinogenic!

Secondly, many of these products such as soaps and shampoos are rinsed off into the water.  This means that whatever is in the products goes directly into the water!  This can easily and quickly contaminate the ground water and anything growing or living in or around the water.

Luckily, there are tons of organic skin care lines hitting the market.  Don’t just trust the labels though.  Just because something is labelled as being “natural” or “botanical” does not mean that it’s organic.  Look for products that say “Paraben free” or “100% organic” instead.  Read the ingredients.  If it’s something you can’t pronounce then maybe it’s not the product that you should buy!  Research products online.  There are a ton of directories that can help you sort out what’s really an organic product and what’s not.  One of my favorite skin care lines right now has to be Burt’s Bees but there are many others.  Sophie Uliano recommends checking out the skin deep database online to research a ton of different products.

Organic, Fairtrade Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal vitamins are absolutely essential in both the months before conceiving and the months during pregnancy.  Most doctors even recommend taking prenatal vitamins until the new mother has stopped breastfeeding.  These vitamins contain essential natural ingredients that help the baby to develop normally.  Some birth defects can be almost completely eliminated when mothers take the proper vitamins in time.  This is the case of folic acid which has a recommended daily intake of 800 – 1000 mg during pregnancy (one of the most important supplements) and the birth defects spina bifida and anencephaly.

Other important vitamins contained in prenatal vitamins include iron which can reduce cases of anemia (30 mg), vitamin D which has been shown to help with depression (400 – 1000 I.U.D.), calcium which is needed to maintain mom’s healthy bones and create healthy bones in the baby (200-300 mg).

The best prenatal vitamins are those that benefit the baby, the mother and the planet.  When you become a parent, you suddenly realize just how important the sustainability of the planet is.  For if we ruin the planet for our children, how will they lead the lives that we’ve been hoping and dreaming of for them?

Organic vitamins are produced without any chemicals, fillers, colors, preservatives, flavors, fertilizers or additives.  They are as true to natural as can possibly be produced.  This is great for the planet and also causes less stress on one’s system that is trying to digest and process the vitamin.  Many women experience nausea from their prenatal vitamins but these side effects are less common when organic vitamins are used.  Fair trade vitamins simply mean that the workers who helped to make the vitamins were paid a fair wage and treated with decency and respect.  Workers should be treated equally, regardless of their country of residence or origin.

Talk to your doctor, midwife, naturopath or pharmacist to find out what supplement is best for you to take but remember to look for organic and fair trade products at every turn.

Organic Sleep Wear for Kids that Encourages Healthy Eating?

Sounds too good to be true right? This seems to be one of those rare circumstances where it’s even cooler than you think it is! New Jammies is a company that is making 100% organic sleepwear for kids that actually gets kids to eat their fruits and vegetables! They come in a variety of adorable food inspired picks although if you’re looking for the grease laden french fries from McDonald’s, you’ll have to shop somewhere else! These jammies are the all natural kind and each pair comes with a book that helps parents to encourage kids to eat what they should be eatting — fruits and veggies!!

In our world of what we want it when we want it, kids meals have become little more than pre-prepared overpacked trash. These tendencies are leading to huge overconsumptions of sugar and salt and contributing to an incredible rate of childhood obesity. Check out articles on the slow food movement for more information on how healthy eating can affect people of all ages. Anything that makes healthy eating a regular part of a child’s day and exposes them to the normalcy of eating fresh and organic is definitely a step in the right direction!

Check out Organic Girl’s blog for your chance to win a pair for the apple of your eye — that’s actually the name of the apple design! They contribute a portion of their proceeds to Fetal Hope — which is a cause close to my heart as a mother of a lost baby. They also contribute clothes and blankets to preemies in NICU units and are a member of the Organic Trade Association. This is another company that I can definitely stand behind and support. Now just how to decide on which design to buy….

Organic Weight Loss Products

During this global recession, it’s hard to believe that some industries are still booming.  The weight loss product industry is one such industry where the money still seems to be coming in.  As people have less and less money to spend on healthy food choices, the rates of obesity may go even higher than the astronomical highs that have been seen over the last decade or so.  The truth is that people can eat a proper and healthy diet on a budget.  It just takes some time and planning.  There are many ways to cut back on your food costs that save calories and fat as well.  One of the main ways to do this is to eat basic, simple foods instead of pre-packaged, pre-processed foods that are bad for your body and for the environment.  The planet is full of unneccessary packaging from over processed products.  The processing of foods often adds salt, sugar, fat and calories as well.  Try cooking simple meals from scratch.  If you can, shop for locally grown organic fruits and vegetables.  Cooking from basic ingredients doesn’t take nearly as long as you think that it would, I guarantee it!  This is something that I have been trying to do more and more of over the last couple of months.

If you truly do need to buy some weight loss products, try going the organic, holistic route to help you shed those extra pounds.  There are many products that contain natural vitamins and minerals that can help you loose weight that will not add extra chemicals to both our bodies and our environment.  Eat less, exercise more.  These are the best and most efficient ways to loose weight.  And both will benefit the environment at the same time.  Eatting less will consume less resources and exercise more will encourage more people to spend times outside enjoying nature and learning to treasure it.

Art my ass!

This guy is hysterical. He is, or should I say WAS, a teacher. That’s right. A teacher! This is the sort of person that we want molding our children. “Stan Murmur” is not his real name, shockingly! I hear he’s got videos of his um, “creative process” on YouTube. I think I’ll pass on watching that. I’m not sure I’d care if this guy turned out to be Kris’ teacher, he was an art teacher after all. They’re supposed to be creative and eccentric aren’t they? He’s suing for being fired, of course. It’s just so, so, so funny! I love the story I listed below about how he started out too. This guy is a genius! Absolutely love it!

“A few years ago I had a painting assignment. I was told to find an organic item to use as a stamp. The stamp was to be brought into class with a finished art product. The art product had to incorporate a stamping or stampings of our organic item. We were to present the finished product to the class for a critique. The class was supposed to guess the organic object used.

It took me a couple of days to come up with an organic item. I finally decided to use my buttocks as a stamp. I rolled latex house paints onto a rubber mat. I sat on the mat and then a piece of rag paper that I had painted gray. I stamped the rag paper twice overlapping a black print with a white one. The day that the project was due, we were instructed to hang our art products on a wall. The entire class took turns guessing the objects that were used in each stamping. Once an object was guessed we discussed whether the finished product was successful as a piece of art. No one could figure out what my organic object had been.
