Organic, Fairtrade Prenatal Vitamins
Prenatal vitamins are absolutely essential in both the months before conceiving and the months during pregnancy. Most doctors even recommend taking prenatal vitamins until the new mother has stopped breastfeeding. These vitamins contain essential natural ingredients that help the baby to develop normally. Some birth defects can be almost completely eliminated when mothers take the proper vitamins in time. This is the case of folic acid which has a recommended daily intake of 800 – 1000 mg during pregnancy (one of the most important supplements) and the birth defects spina bifida and anencephaly.
Other important vitamins contained in prenatal vitamins include iron which can reduce cases of anemia (30 mg), vitamin D which has been shown to help with depression (400 – 1000 I.U.D.), calcium which is needed to maintain mom’s healthy bones and create healthy bones in the baby (200-300 mg).
The best prenatal vitamins are those that benefit the baby, the mother and the planet. When you become a parent, you suddenly realize just how important the sustainability of the planet is. For if we ruin the planet for our children, how will they lead the lives that we’ve been hoping and dreaming of for them?
Organic vitamins are produced without any chemicals, fillers, colors, preservatives, flavors, fertilizers or additives. They are as true to natural as can possibly be produced. This is great for the planet and also causes less stress on one’s system that is trying to digest and process the vitamin. Many women experience nausea from their prenatal vitamins but these side effects are less common when organic vitamins are used. Fair trade vitamins simply mean that the workers who helped to make the vitamins were paid a fair wage and treated with decency and respect. Workers should be treated equally, regardless of their country of residence or origin.
Talk to your doctor, midwife, naturopath or pharmacist to find out what supplement is best for you to take but remember to look for organic and fair trade products at every turn.
Vitamin Supplements
Many ailments are linked with deficiencies in certain vitamins. For example, depression can be aggravated by not having enough Vitamin D in your system. That is not to say that people with depression will be completely “cured” by taking Vitamin D supplements or by spending more time in the sun. However, they do show marked improvement when the deficiency is resolved over people who do not have additional Vitamin D in their systems when suffering from depression.
Some people believe that if you eat a healthy diet that you do not have to take any vitamin supplements at all. However, it would be nearly impossible to eat everything required to get 100% of your recommended intake for the various vitamins that your body needs to function correctly and stay within your recommended caloric intake. Even if you could, some conditions still require additional supplementation. Pregnancy, for example, absolutely requires prenatal vitamins such as Folic Acid to ensure that your child does not suffer from serious and fatal birth defects.
Maintaining a health weight may just be one of those conditions that requires supplementation. Some people, including physicians and pharmacists, recommend taking weight loss supplements to help you lose the extra weight that you may be carrying. Obesity has been linked to many conditions such as heart disease and diabetes that can severly effect and shorten your lifespan. If some vitamin supplements can help people to get to their goal weight, then any risks would probably be far outweighed by the benefits. It’s important to track your vitamin intake though to ensure that you are not being over dosed in one particular area that may lead to side effects. Sometimes there can be too much of a good thing!

Organic Weight Loss Products
During this global recession, it’s hard to believe that some industries are still booming. The weight loss product industry is one such industry where the money still seems to be coming in. As people have less and less money to spend on healthy food choices, the rates of obesity may go even higher than the astronomical highs that have been seen over the last decade or so. The truth is that people can eat a proper and healthy diet on a budget. It just takes some time and planning. There are many ways to cut back on your food costs that save calories and fat as well. One of the main ways to do this is to eat basic, simple foods instead of pre-packaged, pre-processed foods that are bad for your body and for the environment. The planet is full of unneccessary packaging from over processed products. The processing of foods often adds salt, sugar, fat and calories as well. Try cooking simple meals from scratch. If you can, shop for locally grown organic fruits and vegetables. Cooking from basic ingredients doesn’t take nearly as long as you think that it would, I guarantee it! This is something that I have been trying to do more and more of over the last couple of months.
If you truly do need to buy some weight loss products, try going the organic, holistic route to help you shed those extra pounds. There are many products that contain natural vitamins and minerals that can help you loose weight that will not add extra chemicals to both our bodies and our environment. Eat less, exercise more. These are the best and most efficient ways to loose weight. And both will benefit the environment at the same time. Eatting less will consume less resources and exercise more will encourage more people to spend times outside enjoying nature and learning to treasure it.
