Biome 5 Organic Kids Clothes

Looking for a cool gift idea for that preschooler on your list this Christmas?  How about these organic kids shirts from Biome 5?  They’re made from 100% certified organic  cotton that is sweat-shop free and made locally to their company in Los Angeles, CA.  Many products are undyed and unbleached.  The ones that do use dyes use a non-chlorine bleaching process and the lowest impact fiber reactive dyes on the market.

A huge plus to the shirts besides being very environmentally friendly is that they help kids to learn the alphabet and some preliminary words while wearing them.  Having trouble reading what the words on the shirts say?  That’s because they are printed upside down so that the kids can read them while being from the vantage point of wearing them!  Pretty neat…

You can shop online for these products here at Biome5′s homepage or enter a contest at Organic Girl for a giveaway of the winner’s choice of letter!  Each letter displays a different animal so that kids can wear eco-friendly clothing, learn how to read and learn to love the animals in the planet around them.  Does it get any better??  Oh, yeah.  You could win it free by entering OG’s give away.  Don’t enter too many times though, I don’t need the competition!!

Organic Sleep Wear for Kids that Encourages Healthy Eating?

Sounds too good to be true right? This seems to be one of those rare circumstances where it’s even cooler than you think it is! New Jammies is a company that is making 100% organic sleepwear for kids that actually gets kids to eat their fruits and vegetables! They come in a variety of adorable food inspired picks although if you’re looking for the grease laden french fries from McDonald’s, you’ll have to shop somewhere else! These jammies are the all natural kind and each pair comes with a book that helps parents to encourage kids to eat what they should be eatting — fruits and veggies!!

In our world of what we want it when we want it, kids meals have become little more than pre-prepared overpacked trash. These tendencies are leading to huge overconsumptions of sugar and salt and contributing to an incredible rate of childhood obesity. Check out articles on the slow food movement for more information on how healthy eating can affect people of all ages. Anything that makes healthy eating a regular part of a child’s day and exposes them to the normalcy of eating fresh and organic is definitely a step in the right direction!

Check out Organic Girl’s blog for your chance to win a pair for the apple of your eye — that’s actually the name of the apple design! They contribute a portion of their proceeds to Fetal Hope — which is a cause close to my heart as a mother of a lost baby. They also contribute clothes and blankets to preemies in NICU units and are a member of the Organic Trade Association. This is another company that I can definitely stand behind and support. Now just how to decide on which design to buy….

Groovy Organic Tees

Check out these totally awesome 100% organic cotton tees from Koa Clothing.  This is a small clothing company ran by a set of twins with an eye on fashion and the planet.  They use organic cotton and water based inks to hand screen their original art onto t-shirts.  The designs they have on hand are printed in limited quantities which can help when you’re headed to a Green Drinks conference.  How embarassing to show up in the same organic t-shirt as everyone else!  lol

They’ve got a range of styles for guys and girls although they are definitely lacking in the children’s wear department…  Perhaps that’s next to come!  They point out on their site that conventionally grown cotton uses more toxic pesticides than any other crop in the world.  This has left thousands of acres barren and contaminated.  Organically grown cotton can produce the same high quality cotton (it’s actually better) without the destruction and pollution caused by the chemical soup used to grow the more traditional cotton crops.

This is another find I was led to by following Organic Girl’s blog.  I’d recommend checking it out.  There’s a ton of great giveaways (including a couple of shirts by Koa!) and links to all kinds of eco-friendly companies that I probably would have never heard of otherwise.  Thanks organic girl!!!
