Respiratory Guard Review
It seems like the last couple of months has been full of nothing but one illness after another in our house. So I was really happy when I was sent this dietary supplement to review that might give us a bit of a reprieve from constant sickness.
I thought that because I made sure that our entire family got their flu vaccines this year that things would be a bit better. However, all that the shots left us with this season was sore arms!! Whats worse is that we had to go several times to get our flu vaccines and stand in the line up for hours (more than 6 1/2 hours!) to get the H1N1 shots after everyone started paniciking.
The only bad part of this respiratory guard is how long it took to get here — not that the supplement itself is at fault of that. In fact, I’ve got nothing for praise for how the supplement itself is. The instructions say to use two tablets a day and to let them melt in your mouth. They are naturally flavored elderberry extract lozenges and as such, are slightly bitter but still taste pretty good. Elderberry is used for wines and all sorts of yummy things so it’s not as though it tastes mediciney at all.
The respiratory guard has helped to combat the cough I’ve been trying to fight off for the last few days. I feel as though I may just be winning this battle! Elderberry extract has been used to help improve health for centuries and recent studies have shown it be to scientifically backed up by research as well as folk lore. Some studies even say that these elderberry lozenges may even help to prevent H1N1 infection in utero which is something that all pregnant women, whether they’ve been vaccinated or not, should be very concerned about. This is definitely a product that I’ll be trying again and giving to my hubby to help fight off the viruses that the kids always seem to be bringing home from school!
This review is a result of a feedback campaign by Respiratory Guard. The recipients were asked to give their honest opinion about the product they received. Good reviews were not incentivized and poor reviews will not be censored for their opinion of the product.
Flu Facts
The fear of the N1H1 Flu (formerly known as the swine flu) has subsided in recent days. New cases are still being reported everyday but the levels seem to have dropped along with the fear. The knowledge that something as seemingly innocuous as the flu could put the entire world on edge is extremely weird. But is the flu really as harmless as it would first appear?
The Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 shows what the flu is truly capable of. It affected half of the population of the entire planet by some estimates. Medical knowledge of the day didn’t help. People really didn’t know how to prevent the spread of the Spanish flu. Like the swine flu, the Spanish flu choose it’s victims oddly — it effected mainly young healthy people instead of the common virus target of the old and the very young who are more weak. The Spanish flu is actually a subset of the same virus as the Swine Flu. Luckily, current medical knowledge has protected us somewhat from the flu’s effects.
What is truly frightening is the number of people who don’t seem to be listening to the experts. The pork industry is suffering incredible losses due to people’s ignorance of how the swine flu is transmitted. In this way, we are hardly more educated than our 1918 Flu Pandemic counterparts. I think that we are even more vulnerable now because of the popularity of worldwide travel. Back in 1918, travel wasn’t nearly as commonplace. Yet the Spanish Flu still reached into even the most isolated of populations. There’s lots of theories and comparasions of flus online. Check out aboutflu.net for more information about the 1918 Spanish Flu as well as many other flus. There’s also lots of information there about how to prepare for a flu pandemic.

Swine Flu Nearly Pandemic Level
Every channel you seem to watch now has coverage of the swine flu. Here in Canada, there’s one case of the swine flu in the entire province. Unfortunately, it’s in my city. I’ve got to admit that I’m a little freaked out. Especially with kids in public schools and daycares. You never know which kids have just gotten back from vacation or a visit with family from another country. I’m not ready to run out and buy one of the swine flu kits that are quickly selling out but I definitely understand those that do. It’s very scary when you cannot protect your family from diseases — especially diseases getting as much buzz as the swine flu. In reality, it’s probably better to avoid Mexico because of their drug turf wars than because of a risk of swine flu. However, even in my far removed from Mexico location, surgical masks are sold out city wide. I’ve seen people wearing them and it definitely makes you feel unprotected when you don’t have one yourself. For now I’m going to use the common sense methods of hand washing, not touching or allowing my kids to touch their eyes, nose or mouth and trying to avoid people that are sick. Who knows what the next few weeks will bring though. If there were any swine flu kits to be had, I just might scoop one up! Remember to wash your hands, go to the doctor if you think you’re sick and stay away from areas (such as Mexico) that are experiencing a surge in swine flu cases. Above all, try not to panic. Fear of disease is probably worse than the disease itself!
