Organic, Fairtrade Prenatal Vitamins
Prenatal vitamins are absolutely essential in both the months before conceiving and the months during pregnancy. Most doctors even recommend taking prenatal vitamins until the new mother has stopped breastfeeding. These vitamins contain essential natural ingredients that help the baby to develop normally. Some birth defects can be almost completely eliminated when mothers take the proper vitamins in time. This is the case of folic acid which has a recommended daily intake of 800 – 1000 mg during pregnancy (one of the most important supplements) and the birth defects spina bifida and anencephaly.
Other important vitamins contained in prenatal vitamins include iron which can reduce cases of anemia (30 mg), vitamin D which has been shown to help with depression (400 – 1000 I.U.D.), calcium which is needed to maintain mom’s healthy bones and create healthy bones in the baby (200-300 mg).
The best prenatal vitamins are those that benefit the baby, the mother and the planet. When you become a parent, you suddenly realize just how important the sustainability of the planet is. For if we ruin the planet for our children, how will they lead the lives that we’ve been hoping and dreaming of for them?
Organic vitamins are produced without any chemicals, fillers, colors, preservatives, flavors, fertilizers or additives. They are as true to natural as can possibly be produced. This is great for the planet and also causes less stress on one’s system that is trying to digest and process the vitamin. Many women experience nausea from their prenatal vitamins but these side effects are less common when organic vitamins are used. Fair trade vitamins simply mean that the workers who helped to make the vitamins were paid a fair wage and treated with decency and respect. Workers should be treated equally, regardless of their country of residence or origin.
Talk to your doctor, midwife, naturopath or pharmacist to find out what supplement is best for you to take but remember to look for organic and fair trade products at every turn.
End of Season Sale for a Great Cause

‘Tis the season to get great deals on Christmas ornaments for next year! Check out the great selection over at Global Girlfriend where they have ornaments on sale from several countries made by women artisans. The ball ornaments are created with glass beads by women working at a trade co-operative in India. This trade co-op helps women to gain valuable skills, be paid a fair, living wage, have a safe working environment and even a retirement plan! The site contains a huge range of items made by women in fair trade work environments. The beaded ornament comes in four colors as shown and is currently on sale for $4.95 from it’s regular price of $6. Even better, with every purchase of each of these ornaments, Global Girlfriend will fund 1.0 percent of a microgrant for a woman in a rural community in Africa to launch a small business, through Camfed.
The middle ornament is an angel made from women in Kenya to represent peace and happiness during the holiday season. The angel is dressed in traditional Kenyan clothing and is completely adorable, imho. She’d make a great addition to any Christmas tree, regardless of culture, country or ethnicity. Global Girlfriend asks you to purchase these products “to help build a better future for girlfriends around the globe”. Great idea and company name! The angels are on sale right now for $3.50 from it’s regular price of $4.95.
The embroidered ornaments on the right hand side are made by women in India. The dragonfly ornament is currently out of stock but the cat ornament with sequins is still available. These ornaments are made at a women’s fair trade co-operative called Tara Projects which can be read up on in detail on the Global Girlfriend site. It even has short bios of two of the artisans fighting their way out of poverty with strength, perserverance, dignity, skill and hard work. It’s a pretty amazing read that really makes you consider how blessed we are. These ornaments are now $1 off — down to $5.95 instead of $6.95. The’d be a great addition to next years decorations as well as lending a hand up to women crafters in India.

All-Natural Pet Supplements and Vitamins

There’s a whole range of pet supplements that contain all natural ways to help your pet. Kelp is used in some of the products as a natural way to supplement your pet’s diet with vitamins and minerals that are missing from his diet. This can really help to improve his skin and coat while at the same time, improving digestion in an all natural way.
Salmon Oil is made from 100% wild salmon (not farmed!) and has all kinds of great fatty acids in it to imrpove your dogs coat and skin as well. It’s also been shown to be great for a dog’s heart strength
The Kitty garden grows 100% organic wheat, oat, rye and barley to help supplement their diets in the most natural way possible. This can aide in digestion and decrease the frequency of hairballs.
Going green has gone to the dogs! Sorry, couldn’t help it. The point is that if you shop carefully, your pet’s products can be as environmentally friendly as yours are. Supplements and vitamins aren’t just things that us humans need. Sometimes your pet can really benefit from their use as well.
