Transforming Packaging to Useful Furniture

This design by Arpro turns a television’s packaging into a very functional stand for the set.  The foam packaging that encases the television is stacked one piece on top of another with four smaller pieces of styrofoam that protect the edges of the television becoming the support to hold the two larger pieces of foam together.

The result is that the television have completely sustainable packaging with the tv stands being the result.  This is such an ingenious idea by an innovative company.  Other companies should take a look at this design and see what sorts of sustainable ideas that they can come up with for their own packaging needs.  This idea is fantastic, environmentally friendly, decreases waste and cost to consumers.  Fantastic!!

Green Growing Coffee Table

This coffee table is designed by Devon Wang to allow people to literally purchase green furniture.  The sleek coffee table has a green patch on it with actual growing vegetation.  The green comes from a plant called Tillandsia which is commonly called the air plant.

It requires no soil at it’s base or watering to survive.  Instead, it absorbs things found in the air as a food source.  Moisture is taken from air particles with ambient moisture in them and dust and other nutrients are used from the air to help it maintain life.

In this way, the coffee table not only looks great, it’s a source of air filtration as well!  They filter carbon dioxide, produce oxygen and remove dust and other particles from the air!  Imagine, a coffee table that survives from us spilling things on it.  Great design for families with it’s rounded corners and mess absorbing surface!

Cork Chaise Lounge Chair by Daniel Michalik

Daniel Michalik has an incredible range of furniture made entirely from cork wastage from the bottle stopper industry.  Cork is an extremely important element in eco-friendly design because it can be harvested from trees without cutting the tree down.  The trees will continue to grow even long after the cork has been harvested.  Cork can be used in many design situations from furniture construction to flooring applications.  It’s pliability makes it an extremely versatile material that is sustainable, recyclable and in supply in a great abundance.

This lounge chair is made entirely from cork and is called the Cortica.  This piece shows the materials incredible ability to bend in two different directions simultaneously.  This bent sheet is 72″ long to cradle the recliner’s entire body and allow total support.  The cork suspends the seated person so that they feel entirely weightless.  The bends in the material allow the resting person to rock from side to side as well as forwards and backwards.  In this manner, the user becomes entirely buoyant as if they are floating on the ocean.

Cork is 100% natural waterproof quality as well as the feeling Cortica gives the user sparked the imagination of the designer.  He set off with two test subjects, two cork lounge chairs and a camera to the nearby local beach.  The resulting movie is pretty incredible to watch and can be seen on his web site.

His work is incredibly resourceful, full of humor and functionality while still making over designer’s drool with envy.  Daniel Michalik is sure to be featured here again and I’ll certainly keep an eye on his up and coming designs.  His work is currently being featured at Voos Furniture design.

Patio Furniture Design

Outdoor patio furniture comes in a huge array of designs to suit any patio or pool side space.  There is the traditional furniture design of a patio table with umbrella and chairs that all match.  This type of furniture is well suited for backyard dining spaces.  The sling back fabrics are not only very comfortable, they’re also extremely practical!  There are no cushions to take off and store away when it starts to rain.  The seats also dry out very quickly so that if it’s just a passing afternoon shower, you can head right back out and enjoy your backyard environment again.
But that’s not all that outdoor patio furniture can offer anymore.  An outdoor living space can also be easily created instead of just an outdoor dining space.  There are many options for this kind of patio set — high density plastic or wicker are two of the more popular choices.  The wicker conversation pieces look just as beautiful inside of the home as they do outside of the home.  These are absolutely stunning, super practical furniture pieces that can be adapted for any space.  Furniture like this can truly open up the patio as another living space in your home.  The outside spaces of your home can now be just as beautiful, comfortable and be enjoyed just as much as the indoor spaces.  Who would want to even come inside if your patio looked like this?
Outdoor patio furniture also comes in a wide variety of themes.  It does not have to be just your standard boring chair and table set any longer.  Beautiful butterfly themed pieces of outdoor furniture can help you to celebrate nature’s beauty while enjoying it at the same time!  Follow the link to see the huge number of butterfly pieces that are available.  You can buy butterfly themed benches, chairs, tables, stools or fold up chairs in a variety of colors and materials.  They come in white wicker, natural wicker, plain aluminum or aluminum with a stained glass made of lexan.  These pieces would certainly make your backyard more colorful and original than that of your neighbors!

Sawdust Furniture

Imagine how many trees end up simply as saw dust every single year. Yoav Avinoam has taken this waste saw dust from the wood industry and worked it into some amazing and beautiful furniture. He mixes it with a resin and creates pieces that are quite functional out of the saw dust and resin combo that is molded between the legs of a piece. He uses a variety of wood saw dust in this process and makes a range of furniture items including chairs, stools and tables.

I’m not sure how eco-friendly the resin mix is that is used to help create these pieces but I can say for sure that these are far more attractive than MDF furniture pieces! The way that the material crumbles towards the outer edges gives the work a completely new look that is unlike the straight lines of the wood itself or the mess of a pile of sawdust. The material instead creates it’s own outline almost resemble that of bare earth.

This combination of industrial design and a new realization of nature in the resemblance to the earth and tree or root pattern used in the coffee table is an unusual and eye-catching design. These furniture pieces would fit in any eco-enthusiast’s home or office setting. The simplicity of the rounded molded tops gives the pieces the clean lines that many people are looking for while the re-purposing of the saw dust creates an aura of environmental friendliness to the finished product that is much desired. Beautiful, simple and using materials that are at hand…something that all designers should aspire to!

Designer Eco-Furniture

Designer Home Furniture can be attained while living within your boundaries of eco-friendly living.  The trick is to shop carefully!  Only buy pieces that are actually green and research to ensure that the product doesn’t just appear to be green.  Many companies are jumping on the eco-friendly living bandwagon by greenwashing products to appeal to those of us who care about the sustainability of our lifestyles.

Bamboo is a good example of this.  It’s an inherently green resource because it is so fast growing, requires no pesticides or harmful chemicals during it’s growing period.  However, many furniture companies will build something out of bamboo and then stain it or seal it with a toxic compound.  Technically, whatever they’ve constructed is still “green” but is it green enough for you?

Look for pieces like this tetris inspired bamboo shelf by Brave Space Design.  It’s finished with an organic herbal oil and then treated with a non-toxic durable water based finish.  This piece would look amazing in almost any space with the shapes harkening back to the good old days of the 80′s.  You can look backwards in time while protecting the future!  Beautiful and sustainable do not have to be opposing terms.

Transforming Furniture into Furniture

This creatively designed bookcase was done by Isabel Quiroga.  It showcases how outdated pieces can be modernized with creativity and a desire to make do with what you have.  She’s taken a number of outdated tables and drawer units of completely different designs and tied them all together with a common and startlilingly modern colour palate of purple.  The pieces were then cut in half to suit the space that was begging for a dramatic treatment and oodles of storage space.  This treatment not only saves all of these pieces from the landfill, it also fills a unique purpose all of it’s own as an extremely functional bookcase with lots of areas to display and arrange whatever you’d like.  I think this project would be a pretty simple DIY that you could easily customize to your own space and style with family and friend’s castoffs.  It would surely make them envious and think twice about getting rid of that other outdated furniture they have!

Beautiful Reclaimed Wood Furniture

Gursan Ergil shows how eco-friendly and super sexy, modern design go together hand in hand with his reclaimed wood furniture pieces.  He works the natural shape and grain of the wood into the pieces for a truly organic feel.  He uses traditional woodworking techniques and joinery to create furniture pieces that would look at peace in even the most contemporary interior.

Working from Istanbul, Gursan strives to “create well-crafted, harmonious environments both indoors and outdoors, thereby improving our clients quality of life”.  This quote may seem kind of cheesy at first glance until you see his work.  The peacefulness of the reclaimed wood pieces shines through and would definitely help to create interior spaces that would help people reconnect with nature and cherish it at the same time.

His work is definitely worth taking a look at as there are many other pieces not shown here that are beautiful beyond words.  The wood is carefully treated and varnished with the environment in mind.  He uses reclaimed wood for his furniture pieces to show off the “maturity of the wood” as well as to help reduce the need for deforestation for furniture purposes.  By working with the wood instead of simply altering the wood, his pieces truly do highlight the previous existence of the furniture as wood.  Simply astounding at what can be created with skill and creativity with the cast-offs of our modern society.  I would love to be able to invision the world through the eyes of such a skilled artisan!

A Different Kind of Eco-Friendly Kid’s Furniture

This has to be one of the coolest designs of kid’s furniture that I’ve seen in a long, long time.  It isn’t environmentally friendly in it’s materials used — polyurethane foam is pretty much the opposite of green.  What I mean by saying that it’s eco-friendly in a “different” way is it’s versatility of use.  This sytem can go from being an awesome fort, a worktable and bench, a lounge chair to rest on, a ramp to race your cars on and even packs up tight for storing and shipping!  This piece would definitely get used in a variety of ways for many, many years.  It would eliminate the need for a variety of other pieces of toys, climbing equipment, chairs, tables and furniture.  In that sense, it’s eco-friendly.

I absolutely love the design of it and think kids in a huge age range would love it too!  It meets the safety standards of both the USA and Canada so the hassles of having it shipped across the border are averted.  They’ve got alot of ingeniously designed furniture at the site this is available at — eRoomService.  Another piece that I love for it’s ingenuity and versatility is a crib, dresser and bench combo that can be converted into a huge range of furniture that would last a kid throughout all the various ages and stages.  They wouldn’t really need another piece of furniture until they went to college!!  Definitely worth checking out this site for modern pieces for every room of the home with versatility and adaptability in mind.
