Natural Fitness Gear for a Natural Workout
Getting in shape is as great for the planet as it is for you. Losing weight means you’ll be eatting less food, consuming less resources and need less health care in the future which is expensive financially and for the planet. Think of all of the wasted plastic used in medical equipment, all of the drugs used by the sick and all of the resources that a hospital itself consumes!
Luckily, you can even green up your workout with all natural fitness equipment. The yoga blocks featured in the picture here are made of cork which is natural and extremely sustainable. Cork trees continue to grow even after they are harvested! There are other great equipment pieces that are environmentally friendly such as natural rubber yoga mats, exercise mats that are made of recycled materials, work out clothes made of organic cotton or even hemp!
The list of products available is endless when it comes to green living. I think that it makes it easier to live a more environmentally responsible lifestyle one step at a time.
Cork Chaise Lounge Chair by Daniel Michalik

Daniel Michalik has an incredible range of furniture made entirely from cork wastage from the bottle stopper industry. Cork is an extremely important element in eco-friendly design because it can be harvested from trees without cutting the tree down. The trees will continue to grow even long after the cork has been harvested. Cork can be used in many design situations from furniture construction to flooring applications. It’s pliability makes it an extremely versatile material that is sustainable, recyclable and in supply in a great abundance.
This lounge chair is made entirely from cork and is called the Cortica. This piece shows the materials incredible ability to bend in two different directions simultaneously. This bent sheet is 72″ long to cradle the recliner’s entire body and allow total support. The cork suspends the seated person so that they feel entirely weightless. The bends in the material allow the resting person to rock from side to side as well as forwards and backwards. In this manner, the user becomes entirely buoyant as if they are floating on the ocean.
Cork is 100% natural waterproof quality as well as the feeling Cortica gives the user sparked the imagination of the designer. He set off with two test subjects, two cork lounge chairs and a camera to the nearby local beach. The resulting movie is pretty incredible to watch and can be seen on his web site.
His work is incredibly resourceful, full of humor and functionality while still making over designer’s drool with envy. Daniel Michalik is sure to be featured here again and I’ll certainly keep an eye on his up and coming designs. His work is currently being featured at Voos Furniture design.
Comfy Shoes

Some shoes are greener than others but each natural, sustainable product that is used is a step in the right direction. These super comfy sandals from Naot shoes are definitely not a “dark green” product. However, they do use cork and natural latex rubber products. Both of these materials are definitely a step in the right direction. Light green is still a shade of green right? I truly believe that every green choice we make does make a difference on a global scale. So when we chose a sustainably produced product such as cork or bamboo, that tiny step towards environmental living makes a difference when it’s a step taken by many people. Green living is a series of steps not a giant leap. Don’t expect yourself to go from mass consumerism to being an eco-junkie in a day. It takes time, dedication and focus. Keep making the right choices!!

Cork Wedges and Heels — Spring Shoes 2009

Okay, just look at these shoes! This is a sponsored post for the company but I do definitely love their shoes! Perhaps I’m stretching the term “environmental” but they are cork wedges. Cork is a sustainable resource because it’s harvesting does not damage the tree that it comes from. You can remove the cork from the outer bark of the tree while the cork tree just keeps on growing!
These particular cork wedges come from daniblack shoes and are priced at $150. They come in seven different colors and 3 different types of leather strapping — vaccheta leather, soft waxy calf and soft patent leather. The different types of leather are available in different colors. Not all combinations are available so check the options before you get your heart set on one of the combinations!
They have a soft suede lining on the insole of the sandal to make the shoes even more comfortable. The cork wedge is 4″ high with a plaform of 1″ which makes it a great shoe choice for spring. Shoes like this will lengthen the leg by extending the line and drawing the eye towards the shoe — especially in this eye catching red.

These cork heels are from the same company, daniblack shoes. These 4″ cork heels are priced at $170 and have mirrored accents and padded insoles for comfort. The fabric used on the top is denim so these shoes would look fantastic with jeans or more dressy with a skirt. These shoes really scream bohemian while still having a modern edge.
